Award-winning novelist and playwright Jon Marcantoni is pioneering a cultural revolution with the launch of Flamboyán Theatre, a beacon for Puerto Rican narratives in Denver. Following the rousing success of his play “Puerto Rican Nocturne” at Denver’s historic Bug Theatre in August 2022, Marcantoni is now bringing the vibrant tales of Puerto Rico to life through this groundbreaking theatre company.
Flamboyán Theatre isn’t just a theatre company; it’s a movement. It seeks to transform Denver into a hub for Boricua storytelling across diverse genres and multimedia platforms. It’s about pushing boundaries, embracing risk, and crafting new narratives that resonate with our community and beyond.
This initiative is more than just entertainment; it’s about creating a cultural epicenter that amplifies Puerto Rican voices and spending power. Flamboyán Theatre is set to become a sanctuary for celebrating ‘puertorriqueñidad’ and educating the Denver area about our rich history and culture.
In an exciting collaboration, Flamboyán has teamed up with Raíces Brewing Company, a Puerto Rican-owned brewery in Denver, providing a space for auditions, rehearsals, and events. To fuel this ambitious project, a Go Fund Me campaign has been launched. The funds will support projects like a play about Julia de Burgos, a story of a Puerto Rican in the Navy, and the Emerging Playwright’s Project – a mentorship program for Puerto Rican writers in the theatrical arts.
This year’s theme, “Western Boricuas: Stories from Puerto Ricans West of the Mississippi,” aims to illuminate the diaspora experience and spark dialogue among Puerto Ricans across different regions.
